Guidebook to Geology of Anchorage, Alaska
Published in Paperback by Publication Consultants (01 April, 2001)
Average review score:

AwesomeThis book provided me with outstanding photographs of Anchorage and the surrounding area. It was great for our trip to Alaska to have a handy reference that also taught me something about the geology of the place. Highly recommend it.
Unbelievably interesting! This book is a fantastic find! Either on a trip to visit Anchorage or if you live here you need to have a copy with you always.

The Hidden Coast: Kayak Explorations from Alaska to Mexico
Published in Paperback by Alaska Northwest Books (May, 1991)
Average review score:

Absolutely fabulous!I am so bummed that this book is out of print. I read it in the summer of 1995, while houseboating at Lake Powell. Even though I'm not a kayaker, I love being out on the water, and this book really made me want to take up kayaking. The pictures are fabulous, the stories are wonderful! I especially remember the stories about kayaking with the ships off the coast of California, and with the orcas in Alaska. If this book ever comes back into print, I want a copy of it. In the meantime, I guess I'll just keep watching the used book stores!
This is a beautiful book. The author has experienced many paddling adventures all over the West Coast of North America and down into Mexico. A fantastic photographer, Rogers jams this book full of beautiful and inspiring photographs along with interesting narrative. From the pounding surf off the Washington coast to warm, quiet lagoons in the Baja, Rogers takes you along for quite a trip.

Historical Atlas of the Pacific Northwest: Maps of Exploration and Discovery: British Columbia, Washington, Oregon, Alaska, Yukon
Published in Hardcover by Sasquatch Books (June, 2003)
Average review score:

A sense of placeThe "Historical Atlas of the Pacific Northwest . . ." is an excellent read for anyone living in the Pacific Northwest from Coos Bay/North Bend to Nome, even if you aren't into maps. As someone who relocated here from the Midwest five years ago, this book has helped put the webbing between my toes.
The map research is impressive. Derek Hayes has reproduced maps in this book that I never would have known existed. The narative history is good reading as well (I detect the influence of Ken Burns here). The book has greatly increase my knowlege of the place I have chosen to live, both in terms of its history and the physical landscape.
I also recommend it to any history or geography buff, even if you mispronounce Oregon "Or E Gone!"
Beautiful book of old maps and local history!Ok, so I love maps and I live in the area, but this is still a rightly highly-acclaimed wonderful piece of work! Map fans will love it; locals will love it; others will learn (many) things from it. As well as the maps themselves, you also get a sweeping series of historical vignettes associated with each map. The least you'll get from it is the sheer joy of looking at a fantastic collection of wonderful old maps!

Home Sweet Homestead: Sketches of Pioneer Life in Interior Alaska (Alaska Pioneer Series)
Published in Paperback by Alaska Pr (December, 1995)
Average review score:

This Book is a TreasureBooks like these are precious and few. It's the true story of a family living the dream of homesteading in the Alaska wilderness. It's not filled with all the evil, adversarial images of today's adventure books. It is kind, heartfelt and the kind of book to read to your children on a rainy day. These are the kind of people I want my children to emulate, and they show a way of life that we can all only benefit by experiencing. Don't miss this diamond!
GREAT READING!As this is the true story of my wife, Dawn and her brother, Lanny, I found it most interesting. The story of their lives growing up in the heart of Alaska is almost unbelievable. This is a great book to read to your children. If you have always longed to visit Alaska, here is your chance - through the eyes of true homesteaders...

I Dream Alaska
Published in Hardcover by Alaska Northwest Books (May, 1998)
Average review score:

An Alaskan ReviewI found this book a month ago and have shown it to most of my friends and leave it out for others to discover. It is a delight ... a photographic treasure. The images of places that I know and love are special to me. But so are the ones of yet-to-be found (by me) places. Natalie's work surely conjures up a dream. It is a book to be shared with everyone.
Absolutely stunning, a unique and beautiful look at Alaska.Natalie Fobes makes us feel as if we are reviewing an old and treasured picture album. The technique could not be better for the subjects, which have often been seen under the bright light of the Alaskan summer sun or the gray of its long winters. Here you feel that someone put together a collection of personal photographs just for your viewing pleasure.

The Ice Princess (Wells Fargo Trail/James Walker, Bk 8)
Published in Paperback by Bethany House (May, 1998)
Average review score:

not yet!thats to bad they have wound the series down. my Brothers really like this series. my personal favorite would have to be number four, but still, they are all great. My self and My brothers aren't the only ones in my family who like them though. My mother and my Grandmother do. I would suggest it for anyone wanting a good book to engross yourself in for a few nights. great reading.
Excellent StoryI am sorry this is the last book of this series. I have really enjoyed all of the stories. It seems that as soon as the heroes reach some sort of settling down stage, the authors end the books. I would like to see some more stories about Zach Cobb and his brothers. I hope Mr. Walker will reconsider and write some more.

The Kenai Canoe Trails: Alaska's Premier Hiking and Canoeing System
Published in Paperback by Northlite Publishing (December, 1997)
Average review score:

Invaluable ResourceYour guide book "The Kenai Canoe Trails" was an invaluable resource on my son's and my canoe trip through the Swan Lakes route and out the Moose River. The detailed maps of the campsites and portages were absolutely accurate and very needed on this route. Other tips like, "hip boots recommended" proved wise advice! Thanks for hleping my son and I have a great Alaskan vacation.
Very useful guide to Alaska's Kenai canoe trailsI've canoed the Swanson Lake system in the Kenai canoe trails for years, and this is by far the most useful guide to this area. I've never met Mr. Quick, but his book offers very detailed information on such matters as the character of each portage trail, the location of campsites on the various lakes, the presence or absence of fish, and so on. The information provided is highly accurate (even if Quick does overlook a campsite or two). One might quibble with some of his recommendations on gear, portaging methods, etc., but such matters tend to be subjective among experienced outdoors people, and this book isn't primarily intended as such a general how-to guide anyway. "The Kenai Canoe Trails" is highly recommended for anyone planning -- or even dreaming of -- a trip into one of the most wild and pristine wilderness canoe systems in North America.

Leaving Alaska
Published in Hardcover by Atlantic Monthly Press (June, 1994)
Average review score:

Author passed away March 15, 1998This complex, brilliant author passed away March 15, 1998 in Chico, CA. He left a number of works unfinished and it is hoped that they may be published in some form. This book is an insightful look at the "romance and reality" of Alaska. A good read for anyone who has ever thought of going to Alaska for an adventure lifestyle.
An excellent example of an auto biography!"Leaving Alaska" is an excellent example of an auto-
biography. Grant Sims has a woderful an unique writing
style with descriptions of a time and place that puts the
reader right into the story. Any would-be-writer should
read this incredible account of one man's experiences and
memoirs of a beautiful and rugged land.

Lonely Planet Backpacking in Alaska (Backpacking in Alaska, 1st Ed)
Published in Paperback by Lonely Planet (March, 1995)
Average review score:

This is the Best Backpacking Guide for Alaska!3 mos. in Alaska and I used this book extensively! I plotted numerous trips from multi-day trips to long "all day" hikes with the aid of this book. I did about a 3rd of the trails in this book (maybe more) and the trail descriptions are accurate. Additional information regarding lodging was extremely useful....... If you are planning a backpacking trip in Alaska, buy this book! It would have been difficult finding backpacking information without it.
Honest, Off-the-beaten-path advice, Great bookJim Dufresne does a great job in outlining excellent hikes to take throughout Alaska. We used this book in a number of areas. He gives the backpacker's view of things, not the typical tourist's. Mr. Dufresne also wrote a great book on Glacier Bay. The only guidebook we used to kayak the area. We would have never done that area had we not come acrossed his book in Michigan where he is from.

Longbows in the Far North: An Archer's Adventures in Alaska and Siberia
Published in Hardcover by Stackpole Books (August, 1993)
Average review score:

OutstandingThis far outshines the vast majority of modern hunting literature. I love the fact that not every story ends with a successful kill.
Traditional Bowhunting at its finest. As a traditional bowhunter, I found Dr. Thomas' stories to be not only informative but delightfully entertaining. He brings out not only the adventure of the hunt but the ethics of the sport. He has taken us to places that few will be able to go and made us see them through the eyes of a hunter and naturalist. He shows us that it is the hunt that matters, not the harvest. His ethical approach to our sport is a lesson to all who bowhunt. I can not recommend this book more highly. Whether you hunt with modern Hi-Tech equipment or carry a stick bow this book is required reading
